Rooted in his sustained research on environmental precarity, particularly the urgent need for water and the impact of human activity on land, this exhibition emphasizes the pressing situation of what is truly at stake with water and asks what we are willing to do for it? Karner’s connection to these concerns is not merely conceptual but comes directly from his lived experience. Since his twenties, he has been actively engaged in re-naturalization projects, including the Tümpel-Projekt, an initiative in which all proceeds from his work supported the acquisition of protected land for the Nature Conservation Association Styria. This direct involvement grounds his artistic approach, positioning his work as both a reflection on and an extension of ecological responsibility.In WASSERSPIELE, Karner brings the outside into the exhibition space, constructing an ambiguous, carefully staged environment. Using tar paper typically employed for waterproofing roofs, he creates a sealed floor within which pools of water form quiet, reflective surfaces that recall ponds or sites of stillness. Within and around this artificially constructed landscape, sculptures emerge to activate a tension between imitation and autonomy. Nature is referenced but not replicated. Instead, Karner is actively engaged with the impossibility of fully capturing or controlling it. This focus on imitation and control is central to the exhibition. Key conceptual threads—the fear of water (wasserangst) and the unlearning of habitual relationships to nature—unfold through his new body of work. Fluid gestures are captured, expanded, and then cast into aluminum or bronze, transforming the ephemeral gesture into frozen monuments. Two contrasting sculptural surfaces, one smooth and one visibly hand-worked create a tension between control and surrender, process and final product. Karner’s sculptures draw from a variety of organic forms like mushrooms, bark, branches, and magnolia cones yet they coalesce into hybrid, often grotesque, magical growths that resist clear classification. These works remain dynamic and responsive. They interact with their surroundings and shift in meaning depending on their environmental conditions and placement. Whether indoors or outdoors, they operate less as fixed objects and more like participants in an unfolding dialogue between material, space, and viewer interaction. Participation is essential in Karner’s installations. They invite viewers into a shared field of encounter, where distinctions between observer and observed begin to dissolve. Space itself is reimagined as a platform for exchange and unpredictability. WASSERSPIELE marks a pivotal moment in Karner’s career. Moving fluidly between performance, drawing, and sculpture, he is entering new territory, forging a compelling bridge between his sculptural practice and constructing land art interventions and environments. His work resonates within a broader lineage of artists engaging landscape and material, from land artists working with water to contemporary sculptors such as Urs Fischer, Roxy Paine, and Ursula von Rydingsvard, while maintaining a distinctly personal vocabulary rooted in gesture, process, and place. This exhibition is deep reflection on water as both substance and symbol: an essential source of life, a site of potential danger, a marker of privilege, and an increasingly endangered resource. Karner does not attempt to pin down these meanings. Instead, he’s created a situation allowing materials, forces, and viewers to interact in ways that exceed his control. In doing so, he proposes a mode of collaboration and co-creation and invites us to reconsider how we inhabit and shape the world around us. It is a ruse, a mirage that makes itself known through the melancholy and the euphoric, as life separates and splinters. Sometimes the stuff of daily life–a moonrise, an unassuming meal, an unyielding lament, the folding of freshly laundered things–becomes a ritualized act from which we glimpse the sublime. Catching these tiny fleeting shards is everything, wholeness. Shored Against My Ruins features work by seven artists who embrace loose ends, the indecipherable, and the untidy. Their work is deeply connected to the process of coming undone. With a distinct relationship to the physical and psychic archive, each artist tackles the notion of reassembling. Their work is built of personal and communal objects, memories, and autobiographical experiences reminding us to pay close attention to what we collect during our own process of endless reconstruction. In this context, nature, with its organic rhythms, stands in stark contrast to the frantic pace we impose upon ourselves. At the same time, Karner questions humanity’s role in this dynamic—our urgent need to exert control and constantly optimize conditions. In the exhibition, we encounter sculptures that seem to resist final completion, reminding us that time itself is not a limitation but a medium. Karner further expands the structures of his sculptures, transforming them into self-contained spaces. Within their aluminum frameworks, hollow chambers emerge, carrying the potential to become habitats for insects and plants of various kinds. These sculptures are simultaneously complete and unfinished - an embodiment of our own dualities: ambition and patience, creation and destruction, learning and unlearning. These reflections are further emphasized by the subtle temporal dimension of the works. Time appears as a medium—one we try to master but must ultimately submit to, especially in the face of a planet struggling to regenerate. The materials and organic elements used in Karner’s work highlight the tension between permanence and impermanence, illustrating the inseparable connection between growth and decay. Nature, untamed and self-determined, asserts itself over the sculptures, shaping and reclaiming them beyond the artist’s control. exhibition "fichtengrau" at Galerie Kandlhofer greet visitors in a larger-than-life and almost intimidating manner. Resembling fantastical-futuristic life forms (or landscapes?), these works, made of aluminum and bronze cast, exhibit finely branching structures and an organic surface, leaving behind a highly fragile impression. The reference to nature, particularly botany, is obvious, as the artist clearly names individual works in relation to it. The resilient spruce serves as the namesake for Karner's nearly three-meter-high sculptures, titled "Fichtengrau" or "fichtengrün." While evoking a clear image, the exhibited works only partially reflect this image in an altered form. Despite vaguely resembling dead trees in their vertical arrangement and barren appearance, the unconventional, almost bizarre forms of the sculptures immediately disrupt this clear image. They are based on concrete references from the flora and fauna, such as mushrooms, branches, tree bark, or vineyard snails, which the artist combines into grotesque sculptural growths through casts. Additionally, fragmentary references to human intervention are hinted at when the individual elements are assembled into artistic assemblages. The idea of choreography becomes apparent when observing the sculptures. From a distance, the figurative silhouette of the objects initially comes to the forefront, only to reveal upon closer inspection a multitude of diverse organic forms, inevitably drawing the viewers' gaze into the depths of surreal landscape scenes. These are partly patinated and partly covered with clay slip by the artist. The result is an aesthetically homogeneous overall impression that almost gives the sculptures a classical appearance. From their observer position, humans gaze upon an artistic amalgam of our reality, distorted almost beyond recognition, frozen in the moment of its creation. Karner's reflections on the interplay between humans and nature seem to materialize in the sculptures: starting from the concrete motif of the spruce, which, as a particularly robust tree species in the 20th century, was predestined for reforesting forests, the full extent of human mismanagement of the past decades is vividly brought to light. In the face of climate change, tragically, the spruce is one of those tree species most severely affected by global warming. It is an observational glance at our present rather than a clear critique that Karner undertakes here – pessimism is foreign to the artist; rather, delicate signs of hope become discernible as individual shoots sprout from the underground of one of his sculptures. Karner has prepared the ground of specific works with seeds, the watering of which he personally undertakes. Consequently, during the exhibition period, the sculptures will undergo a metamorphosis that symbolizes the human potential to counteract the damage already done by showing mindfulness towards nature and not remaining indifferent. The examination and possible linking of different perspectives are central anchors of this project. For this exhibition, the collaborators left their familiar territory and introduced each other to their respective techniques. The result is a series of large-format paintings created in alternating cooperation, representing an interplay between the drawings of sculptor Karl Karner and the representational paintings of Nana Mandl. Conversely, countless lacquered metal casts by Nana Mandl hang from the ceiling, silently pouring over the viewers like tears, complementing Karl Karner's powerful yet airy aluminium sculpture, which towers in the centre of the room.&nbsp;Between the individual works, there are also so-called ‘feeding bowls’, which are filled with 12 different courses during the vernissage, inevitably bringing viewers into close contact with the artworks. The otherwise very different approaches and techniques can hardly be distinguished from one another in retrospect: abstract painting meets graphic elements, then clear motifs, only to disappear again in a layer of mud, while at the same time growing into an overall installation through the sculptural elements. The question arises as to what remains visible of the existing and how it affects what is superimposed on it. Das Wort will ausgesprochen werden. Es will in den Mund genommen werden. Probieren Sie es ruhig aus, hier und jetzt: Brutbladd. Wie fühlen Sie sich dabei? Unwohl? Sie denken vielleicht: Menschen, die in die Stille hinein mit sich selbst sprechen, sind wahnsinnig. (Aber wo hört der Sinn auf und wo fängt der Wahnsinn an?) Beim zweiten Mal wird es Ihnen schon leichter fallen: Brutbladd. Achten Sie auf Ihre Lippen. Wie sie sich zusammenpressen und mit einer Brutalität die Laute hinausdrücken. Eine Geburt. Ein Blutbad. Mit dem Bladd werden Sie - je nach Dialekt - vielleicht einige Schwierigkeiten haben. Wenn Sie zum Beispiel aus dem Norden Deutschlands kommen, möchte Ihre Zunge das D am Ende des Wortes zu einem T machen. Im linguistischen Sinne nennt man das Auslautverhärtung. Man könnte aber auch sagen: Ihre Zunge führt ein eigenes Leben. Konzentrieren Sie sich und versuchen Sie, sich Ihrer Zunge zu widersetzen. Stellen Sie sich einfach vor, das Wort wäre hier nicht zu Ende. Das Wort wuchert weiter. Ein D folgt dem nächsten. Denken Sie sich eine ganze Reihe an D's. Die D's hängen an dem Wort wie neue, kleine Blätter. Sie müssen sich das Wort im Plural denken. Denken Sie sich einen ganzen Wald Brutblädder: Brutbladdbrutbladdbrutbladdbrutbladdbrutbladdbrutbladd brutbladdbrutbladdbrutbladdbrutbladdbrutbladdbrutbladd brutbladdbrutbladdbrutbladdbrutbladdbrutbladdbrutbladd Vielleicht werden Sie für einen Moment mitgerissen in einem Brutbladd-Strom. Vielleicht merken Sie auch, wie das Material der Sprache hervortritt, wie die Bedeutung aus der Druckerschwärze flieht und den Buchstabenkörper nackt zurücklässt. Wie die Laute nur noch ein Jucken der Lippen sind und sonst nichts. Wie Ihnen die Zunge fremd wird. Wie Ihnen Ihr Körper fremd wird. Ja: Die Bedeutung ist dem Material fremd. Aber bevor Sie jetzt ganz davonfliegen: Lassen Sie es nicht los. Sie haben nichts anderes zum Festhalten. Greifen Sie zu. Verbrennen Sie es, zermalmen Sie es. Bepflanzen Sie es. Vergraben Sie sich bis zum Ellenbogen darin. Nehmen Sie es in den Mund. Sprechen Sie es aus. Sehen Sie es ein: Sie werden das Material nie ganz unter Kontrolle kriegen. Mit seinen wuchernden D's wird es Ihnen immer wieder hineingrätschen, ins Verstehen. Aber es wird auch Blüten treiben. Es brütet im Material. Da glüht etwas: Brutbladd.
